11'PM E
!ASSOCIATES
February February ?8, 1986
Mr. Nigel Finney
Metropolitan Airports Commission
6040 28th Ave. S
Minneapolis, MN 55450
Dear, Mr. Finney
277 COON RAPIDS BLVD.
SUITE 410
COON RAPIDS, MN 55433
(612) 784-6300
As Chairman of the City of Ramsey's Airport Commission, I'm
seeking your help in getting Gateway Airport listed in the
National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.
We have met with Frank Benson, Chief of the FAA's airport
district office and our entry is currently under review.
Entry into the system plan is required as a step for
possible federal funding. Recognition is critical in our
efforts to convert Gateway from a privately owned public use
facility to a municipally owned and operated facility.
This project has the support of the cities of Ramsey, Anoka
and Elk River. The airport is recognized in the Met Council's
regional system plan and MN/DOT's state system plan.
The FAA recognizes the need for an airport in this area due to
geography and local demand. However, the FAA feels the site is to
restricted and should be expandable to a General Utility II or
a Basic Transport facility.
Ramsey disagrees with this because the demand is at the Basic
Utility level and there is no need to duplicate Anoka County
Airport. With Municipal ownership Gateway will continue to
serve the needs of the local area and the metropolitan region.
With out NPIAS entry the airport will most likely cease to exist
putting more pressure on the remaining airports to house Gateways
25 based aircraft further diminishing the regions landside and
airside capacity.
Any support you can give our cause is greatly appreciated. I feel
the developement of Gateway as shown in the ALP and Master Plan
will be an asset locally and compliment the MAC system at the same
time.
Cordially,
Jack Ippel
