the commercial traffic. If this diversion occurs, then the percentage of itinerant
operations at Minneapolis/St. Paul would increase significantly. This is shown in
Table II-11 (pages 2 through 5). Conversely, airports such as Airlake and Lake
Elmo, whose based aircraft are comprised of more than 90 percent single-engine
piston aircraft, can expect their percentages of local and itinerant operations to
remain relatively stable. This has also been the case at similaz airports in the United
States.
(2) Q,perational Fleet Mix
At airports that are primarily general aviation airports, it is common for the
based aircraft fleet mixes to be similar to the operating fleet mixes. Such is the case
with the seven relievers in this system. For airports where only piston aircraft aze
based, the operating fleet mix was assumed to be the same as the based aircraft fleet
mix (see Table II-12). At the remaining airports, adjustments were made to reflect
the fact that based turboprop and turbojet aircraft, as well as rotorcraft, often do not
operate as frequently as the smaller aircraft. In addition, smaller aircraft aze
responsible for the vast majority of touch and go operations at all airports.
Therefore, at airports where turboprop and turbojet aircraft are based, the operating
fleet mix was adjusted to reflect a percentage of piston aircraft operations that is
higher than the percentage of based piston aircraft.
The estimating procedure mentioned above has not proved to be a reliable
technique in estimating operational GA fleet mixes at commercial service airports.
At Minneapolis/St. Paul International, and other airline hub airports, the percentage
of single- and multiengine piston aircraft operations does not usually exceed the
percentage of based piston aircraft. At Mianeapolis/St. Paul, the current based
aircraft fleet mix was used as the current operating fleet mix. In the projection years,
the percentage of single- and multiengine piston aircraft operations was gradually
reduced to reflect the changing based fleet mix.
