1
1
1
l
1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1.1 DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED ACTION
The City of Ramsey adopted an Airport Master Plan Study in 1985
which recommended the acquisition and improvement of Gateway
North Industrial Airport. Gateway North has been a privately
owned public use facility which has been in operation since
1972. The Airport Layout Plan, developed as a part of the
Master Plan Study, was approved by the Federal Aviation Admini-
stration (FAA) on July 24, 1987 after acceptance of the airport
into the National Plan of Integrated Airports System (NPIAS) on
April 8, 1986.
The Master Plan addressed the future activity growth and
facility requirements for a 20 year planning period. The major
facilities improvements recommended and which this study further
addresses are:
• Acquisition of approximately 230 acres of land including two
commercial establishments and 19 residences to provide public
ownership of the airport facility and associated approach
zones.
• Paving and reconfiguration of Runway 16-34 to provide a
75'x3300' hard surface runway.
• Development of a parallel and connecting taxiway system.
• Runway lighting and approach aid improvements.
• Obstruction removal.
• Building area improvements to provide operating and tie down
aprons, hangars, auto parking and airport related activities.
Figure 1-1 illustrates the existing facilities of the airport.
The existing facility provides a primary landing strip length of
2,500' plus overruns on each end for a maximum takeoff length
of 3,580' and a maximum landing length of 3,260'. The crosswind
Runway 9-27 provides a maximum landing and takeoff length of
2,540'. Figure 1-2 illustrates the proposed improvements
recommended in the approved Airport Layout Plan with a 3,300'
paved runway.
A recent count indicates 27 based aircraft at the airport. All
of which are single engine aircraft. An estimated 21,000 annual
operations occur at the airport based on the state's latest 5010
estimates (11/25/86).
1-1
