In this publication the Land Use Guidance Zone (LUG) system is intro- duced as an approach to airport noise evaluation and compati- bility land use planning. 'Table 2-2 displays the Ldn noise exposure metrics and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) noise assessment guide - I lines with suggested noise controls. (Information for this table comes from FAA Advisory Circular 150/5050-6, Airport -Land Use Compatibility Planning). HUD considers as acceptable any Iarea exposed to levels lower than 65 Ldn. The LUG system is a uniform noise evaluation technique which directly relates to land use compatibility planning and which I constitutes a single system for determining the impact of noise upon individuals resulting from aircraft operations at an airport. This system utilizes the common noise estimating I methodologies as input and translates these, using a series of noise quality zones, into categories of land use compatible or incompatible with the existing and forecast aircraft noise impacts at a particular airport.
