A review of windrose information for Minneapolis -St. Paul
International Airport was undertaken. The National Climatic
Data Cente:'s most recent compilation covers the 10 year
period from 1965-1974. Figure 6-1 illustrates the percen-
tage of tine (10 year average) winds of varying velocities
occur.
The existing runway configuration provides crosswind
coverage a: 10.5 knots (12.5 MPH) as follows:
Runway 16-::4
Runway 9-27
Combined Coverage
90.3%
81.8%
99.1%
Various runway orientations were assessed for new runways.
A 16-34 orientation for the primary runway provides maximum
wind coverage (90.3%). The desired wind coverage, however,
is 95%. Since no single runway orientation can attain 95%
coverage at Gateway, possible development of a crosswind
runway was assessed to achieve a higher wind coverage. The
recommend & length for a crosswind runway is 80% of the
primary rurway length or 2600 feet. Preferred orientation
would be east -west providing a combined crosswind coverage
equal to the present configuration (99.1%). Due to site
restrictiors and funding limitations, however, no crosswind
runway is recommended in the development plan.
6.3 Taxiways
A parallel taxiway is recommended as part of the fundamental
configuration if more than 20,000 annual operations are
forecast to occur within two years of development. This
level of activity is forecast at Gateway within a two year
period after construction. It is, thus, recommended that a
full lengtk parallel and connecting taxiways be developed
with initial construction. The taxiway width for Design
Group I aircraft is 25 feet. FAA's minimum recommended
separation aistance is 225 feet between taxiway centerline
and runway i:enterline for aircraft with wingspans less than
49 feet. I: is recommended, however, that the separation
distance be increased to 240 feet to provide lateral
clearance for occassional use by aircraft with wingspans
greater thal 49 feet. This separation distance also
increases the degree of flexibility for future development
beyond this planning period.
6-2
