CASE # 1

CONSIDER NAMING CENTRAL PARK'S SHELTER AND CONCESSION STAND
"LION'S PAVILION"
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor

Background:

In 2006, City Council authorized the construction of the replacement of the concession stand and
shelter at Central Park with a significantly larger, modern structure. The approximately
$425,000 project was initiated by a $367,000 contribution from the Ramsey Lions for this
purpose.

The Ramsey Lions have functioned as the most prominent philanthropic organization in the City
for decades.

Observations:

This spring, both the Park and Recreation Commission and City Council have unanimously
supported recognizing the Lions for their contribution towards the park building with a $500
allocation for this purpose. Previously, a plaque to be affixed to this building was suggested and
approved. More recently, a 'community montage' is being organized, and the Lions have
expressed interest in being represented with this project. With the Lions not having a home, or
place of business per se, it was suggested that perhaps the concession stand and shelter be
formally named the 'Lion's Pavilion,' and then both their logo may be placed on the building,
and the pavilion at Central Park would be their geographic location within the montage.

Martin Schindel, a representative for the Lions thought that above method of recognition may be
more appropriate than the plaque, and supports this modification in the recognition of the Lions
Club.

Ifthere is consensus to rename the shelter, a resolution may be placed on City Council's consent
agenda to formally affect this change. The cost of the 30" inch logo is approximately $100
dollars with shipping.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends proceeding with the dedication, by formally renaming the park building the
"Lions Pavilion". Attached for your information is an image of the logo, and the proposed
location upon the building.

Commission Action:

Motion to recommend that the park building be renamed "Lions Pavilion".

Reviewed by:
Director of Public W orks/Principal City Engineer

P&R: 6110/10
