CC CASE # ~ • ~~
AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE PAID ON-CALL FIREFIGHTERS
By: Colleen Lasher, Human Resources Technician
Background:
In an effort to bring the City to its full complement of firefighters, staff began a recruitment
process to hire up to six additional paid-on-call firefighters. A firefighter orientation was held in
December 2009 and the physical agility tests and interviews were conducted in January 2010 for
four of the six positions. Additional interviews and physical agility tests were conducted in May
2010 from this same recruitment file. All candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of
the Fire Chief, both Assistant Fire Chiefs, the Fire Inspector, and the Human Resources
Technician.
At this time staff is recommending that the following individuals be hired as paid-on-call
firefighters: Mr. Dennis Morphew and Mr. Joshua Diekow. The addition of Mr. Morphew and
Mr. Diekow, along with the four firefighters hired in Apri12010, fulfills the Fire Chiefs request
of six new firefighters. Both individuals have successfully completed the necessary background
checks, assessments, and medical exams.
Recommendation:
Staff met earlier this evening with the Personnel Committee and the Personnel Committee
unanimously recommends that the City Council make a motion recommending that the City hire
the following individuals as paid-on-call firefighters: Dennis Morphew and Joshua Diekow.
Both individuals would be hired at an hourly wage of $12.88 and would begin employment on
July 14, 2010.
Funding Source:
These paid-on-call positions were approved as part of the 2010 General Fund Budget. Per the
Joint Powers Agreement with the City of Nowthen, the City of Ramsey will be reimbursed for a
portion of the salaries for these positions.
Council Action:
Make a motion hire the following individuals as paid-on-call firefighters: Dennis Morphew and
Joshua Diekow. Both individuals would be hired at an hourly wage of $12.88 and would begin
employment on July 14, 2010.
Reviewed By:
City Administrator
CC: 07-13-10
