CASE #1
CONSIDER PAVING BITUMINOUS TRAIL ALONG ALPINE DRIVE
By: Steven Jankowski, Assistant City Engineer
Background:
Staff has been directed to prepare an estimate to consider the construction a ten foot wide
bituminous trail in conjunction with the mill and overlay project scheduled for later this fall
along Alpine Drive, between Highway 10 and Puma Street. In addition to the segment
coinciding with the overlay project, staff is also presenting additional trail segments which might
also be considered to increase connectivity of the City trail system. These streets currently have
wide paved shoulders which make travel reasonably safe to destinations farther east and north
along both of these streets.
Attached to this case is a figure which illustrates both the existing and proposed trail sections for
consideration. Proposed Segment A would extend from Highway 10 to a point 900 feet
southeast of Andrie Street where it would connect with an existing trail that extends eastward
and northward around Lake Itasca. This segment would also require a concrete railroad crossing
at the tracks.
Proposed Segment B would connect to a point on the existing trail system which parallels Alpine
Drive along the northern right of way. The City owns the short north/south segment needed to
make the connection between the existing trail around Lake Itasca and Alpine Drive. This
segment would continue eastward to Armstrong Blvd where it would connect to an existing trail
east of Armstrong Boulevard to Variolite Street.
Proposed Segment C would extend southward from Alpine Drive, «long Armstrong Boulevard,
to Bunker Lake Boulevard. This would complete a trail connection between the western
residential neighborhoods and the COR.
Financial:
The Table Below provides information for each length of proposed trail:
Segment A Segment B Se ment C Total
Length 3,440 ft 5,745 ft 3,060 ft
Trail const cost $68,000 $114,900 $61,000
Other cost $25,000 RR X-in $30,000 fill
Total Const.
