CASE # 1
EAB Management Plan
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator
Background:
As the Board is well aware, Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was discovered in St. Paul in May of
2009. Since that initial discovery, EAB has also been confirmed in Minneapolis (about 1 mile
from initial discovery site) and in the southeast corner of the state in Houston County. It is no
longer a question of if EAB will be confirmed in Ramsey but rather a question of when. With
that in mind, the Board included developing an EAB management plan as part of its 2010 Work
Plan.
Observations:
Management plans can range from being fairly simple to very large, complex documents, mostly
depending upon staffing, street tree populations and a city's urban forest program. After
reviewing several other communities' management plans, and taking into account that Ramsey's
urban forest program is still in its infancy, Staff has prepared a draft EAB Management Plan for
the Board to review. The most important component of the document is the action steps within
the ash management plan section. In addition to the EPB's review, the EAB Management Plan
will eventually also be reviewed by Public Works Staff, Parks and Recreation Commission and
ultimately presented to City Council for consideration.
Recommendation:
The Board should review the draft EAB Management Plan and be prepared to discuss their
thoughts/concerns/suggestions.
EPB Action:
Based on discussion.
Attachments•
A.
