CASE #2

CONSIDER PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK MODIFICATIONS ON RAMSEY
BOULEVARD, NORTH OF 149th AVENUE
By: Tim Himmer, City Engineer

Background:

To advance the stated goal of making the community more walkable staff continues to
investigate options to enhance its sidewalk and trail system. Staff is currently working with
Anoka County on the installation of a pedestrian crossing along Armstrong Boulevard at 1615t
Avenue, but another County road crossing has been identified for modifications; this one being
an existing mid-block crossing along Ramsey Boulevard just north of 149th Avenue. Staff feels
this mid-block crossing is not the safest location to facilitate non vehicle traffic movements,
considering there is no trail connection on the east side of the road.

(;

Staff believes that this crossing would be better served if it were relocated to the intersection at
149th Avenue. There currently exists a trail on the east side of Ramsey Boulevard in that
location and it creates a direct access into the neighborhood to the east, including the park space
within the PELTZER ADD ITI ON. Staff is requesting that the Public Works Committee provide
direction on whether to approach Anoka County with this crosswalk relocation request.

Financial:

The installation and Maintenance of crosswalk signage and pavement marking wound be the
responsibility of Anoka County. Staff time would be utilized to contact Anoka County and
negotiate the Council's desires.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends that the Public Works Committee recommend to the City Council that staff
draft a letter to Anoka County requesting the relocation of the crosswalk on Ramsey Boulevard
to the intersection of 149th Avenue.

Action:

Motion to recommend to the City Council that staff draft a letter to Anoka County requesting the
relocation of the crosswalk on Ramsey Boulevard to the intersection of 149th Avenue.

Attachment:

Location Map

Reviewed By:

Director of Public Works/Principal City Engineer
Streets Supervisor
Parks Supervisor

PW: 07/20/10
