GO VI Serif CASE # 5, Olo
CONSIDER AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR A CULVERT REPLACEMENT UNDER 176TH
LANE NW
By: Tim Himmer, City Engineer
Background:
Staff has noticed that a section of the roadway along 176th Lane NW, between Okapi and Marmoset
Streets, has been continually eroding over time causing potholes in the street. Upon further
investigation it was discovered that the culvert under that roadway, which serves as the drainage way for
County Ditch #51, has deteriorated and is showing signs of failure. The roadway subgrade from above
is falling through holes in the culvert causing roadway failures. If this problem were to continue without
being addressed it could lead to a catastrophic failure.
Staff has solicited quotes from 3 contractors to perform a culvert replacement project, which work
would entail:
• Mobilization, traffic control, and erosion control
• Ditch by-pass construction and dewatering
• Removal and replacement of a 42" culvert
• Muck excavation
• Installation of flared end sections and rip -rap placement for armoring
• Removal and reinstallation of the bituminous roadway
It is anticipated that this work can be completed in approximately 10 days. It is ideal to perform this
type of work late in the season when the flows within the ditch are at their lowest and impacts to the
surrounding area can be minimized. Depending on the weather the final paving of the project may
extend into next spring, but the roadway will be brought to grade and made passable with class 5 in the
interim (if necessary).
Funding:
The low bidder is Dryden Excavating, Inc. in the amount of $44,365. The funding of this project will
come from the Storm Water Utility Fund.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council award a contract to Dryden Excavating, Inc. for the culvert
replacement under 176th Lane NW in the amount of $44,365.
Attachments:
Location map
Reviewed By:
Finance Director
Public Works Director
City Administrator
CC: 11/9/10
