PC CASE

AUTHORIZE HIRING OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT
By: Heidi Nelson, Assistant City Administrator

Background:
As a part of its 2002 budget, Council authorized an Associate Planner position for the
Community Development Department. The position of Associate Planner was filled via
an internal promotion of the Community Development Assistant, Megan Wald. Ms.
Wald assumed the duties of Associate Planner in March of 2002 and Council authorized
staff to proceed with recruitment for the Community Development Assistant position.
Staff advertised the position internally and one letter of interest was received. After
reviewing the internal letter of interest, staff decided to proceed with an external
recruitment for the Community Development Assistant position. Twenty-five
applications were received and five applicants were interviewed on May 15th, 2002 by a
panel consisting of the Community Development Director, Principal Planner, and the
Assistant City Administrator. One phone interview was conducted with a candidate that
currently resides in and works for the City of Ventura, California. A follow-up video
teleconference interview was conducted with the California candidate, Christopher
Anderson. Based on the panel's recommendation, staff is recommending hiring
Christopher Anderson for the position of Community Development Assistant. If
approved by Council, Mr. Anderson's start date will be July 1st, 2002.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff is recommending Christopher Anderson for the position of full-time Community
Development Assistant at a starting wage of $17.27/hour plus benefits and will accrue
two weeks of vacation per year. Mr. Anderson's hiring would be contingent on successful
completion of background checks and he must pass an employment physical and
drug/alcohol screen.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend Christopher Anderson for the position of full-time Community
Development Assistant at a starting wage of $17.27/hour plus benefits and two weeks
vacation, contingent on successful completion of background c_he~ks, employment
physical, and drug/alcohol screen. , ~/~C/3 !/~/j/ .

Reviewed by:
City Administrator
Director of Community Development
Assistant City Administrator

PC: 06/ 1/02

-235-
