Background:
2011 Environmental Expo & Tree Sale
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator
CASE # 2
Each year, the City of Ramsey coordinates an Environmental Expo and Tree Sale event to usher in
spring, encourage tree planting throughout the community and to promote environmental awareness and
education of its residents. The 2011 budget includes funding for this event and Staff has begun to
consider options for a 2011 Environmental Expo and Tree Sale.
Observations:
Staff still has some reservations about holding this type of event in the Municipal Center due to certain
constraints. As has been referenced in past discussions, as well as in a couple responses to a survey that
was conducted after the 2010 event, having some other activities, demonstrations, or attractions (more
similar to when the event was held at the elementary school) may help draw more people in to the event.
However, the layout of the building and the lack of outside space for such things to draw folks into the
building do not lend themselves to that type of offering. Staff would like the Board to give some thought
to how some new twists could be incorporated into the event.
In addition to the exhibitors that have been invited to participate in past events, Staff would like to extend
invitations to new businesses and groups. Staff has a few invitees in mind but will be looking to the
Board for ideas and suggestions for either specific businesses or groups to invite or other types of
businesses or groups that may be considered a good fit for this type of event.
One suggestion from the Board following the 2010 event was to only offer one presentation and try to
lock down a key note speaker. Staff would like some feedback from the Board with regard to that type of
format and if the Board is agreeable to that, are there specific topics that would be preferred for the one
presentation?
Again, based on discussion after the 2010 event, Staff will be implementing the following changes to try
and improve the 2011 event:
• Name tags for exhibitors
• T -shirts for Staff and EPB for easier identification
• Some form of free beverage(s) /refreshment for exhibitors
• Recycling containers throughout expo area
Staff will take any other suggestions /recommendations under advisement should the Board have any.
Recommendation
The Board should be prepared to discuss the expo format, presentation(s) topics, businesses and/or
groups to invite, the Board's involvement with planning/organizing the expo event, and their booth.
EPB Action
Based on discussion.
EPB: 1/3/11
