!

'l
PC CASE # -

I
!

CONSIDER HIRING CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST INTERN FOR
POLICE DEPARTMENT
By: Rhonda Heryla, Human Resources Manager

Background:

As a part of the approved 2002 budget, there was a personnel request from the Police
Department to increase office clerical hours by five (5) hours per week in 2002. These
additional hours were intended to serve the Crime Prevention Specialist in needed clerical
and administrative support. Since the approval of the budget, staff has learned that there
is not an interest amongst the current Police Department clerical staff to pick up these
additional five (5) hours of clerical time. Therefore staff would like the City Council to
consider the option of adding a Crime Prevention Specialist Intern to work on select
projects for a period of 3-6 months.

Observations:

The Crime Prevention Specialist Intern will serve three main purposes. First, the intern
will' provide needed clerical and administrative support to the Crime Prevention
Specialist. This office support would help the Crime Prevention Specialist in organizing
and planning for programs such as National Night Out, CompuKid, Crime Watch
Program, and safety seminars. Second, the intern would work closely with the Crime
Prevention Specialist and Corporal on planning for National Night Out and help keep the
momentum going for this important community event when the Crime Prevention
Specialist is out on maternity leave. Third, the internship will provide a practical and
valuable learning experience for an individual interested in criminal justice, community
relations, program planning, or a related field.

The internship would stay within 2002 budget guidelines. An intern will not be eligible
for benefits and the City would be responsible for the hourly wage ($12/hour) plus
medicare, social security, and worker's compensation. The intern would work a
maximum of ten (10) hours per week and make a commitment for 3-6 months.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the recruitment and hiring of a Crime
Prevention Specialist Intern (within budget guidelines) who will work with the Police
Department for a period not to exceed 6 months.

-255~-
