CASE

PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROPOSED RENAMING OF PORTIONS ON 153rm
AVENUE N.W. AND 155TM AVENUE N.W. TO ALPINE DRIVE N.W.
By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

Attached is a map which identifies the segments of 153rd Avenue N.W. which serve the City as
an east/west collector street with the completion of a 0.8 mile segment betwveen 155th Avenue
N.W. and Variolite Street N.W. to 153rd Avenue N.W. to Armstrong Boulevard N.W. This
collector street will transverse the entire City, beginning at Roanoke Street N.W. near the Rum
River and ending at Highway #10 near the Elk River border. Because this roadway has been
constructed in segments and because it transverses north and south for a distance of about 1,700
feet to avoid wetlands, it has various names. (In addition to 153''d Avenue N.W. and 155th
Avenue N.W., some documents refer to the north/south segment between Hematite Street N.W.
and Ramsey Boulevard N.W. as Jaspar Street N.W.).

Public comment was solicited last year through the Ramsey Resident on an appropriate uniform
name for this cross town collector, and "Alpine Drive" was selected. Providing a uniform name
will replace the cumbersome "153rd Avenue N.W./155th Avenue N.W." designation and will
eliminate confusion thereby enhancing the public welfare and safety,

The street name change will affect require new addresses for 25 residential properties, Allina'
Medica[ Clinic, Ramsey Pharmacy, and the Links of Northfork golf course. The City of Coon
Rapids recently had a similar name change affecting business and residential addresses. To
assist with implementation that City allowed approximately one year before the name change
became effective, and notified all government agencies and utilities of the change.

Council Action:

Following the public hearing the next step toward implementing the street name change would
be to order the introduction of an ordinance making the name change. This can be' done
immediately after the public hearing or at a future meeting.

Reviewed by:

Assistant City Administrator
Police Chief
Director of Public Works

CC: 02/13/01

-161-
