Anoka County Union

Anoka County Union

I IIIIII I I

Posted 2/8/01

On the patrol

by Tammy Sakry
Staff writer

The night is cold and the wind is bitter but she is looking forward to her night.

At 5:15 p.m. Public Safety Aide's (PSA) Police Reserve Cpl. Sharon Johnson
dons her uniform and gear, including a pager and police utility belt, minus the
firearm, and grabs her just-in-case bag containing a heavy pair of chopper
mittens and a hat that brings to mind winters on the Russian steppes.

It's the beginning of her eight-hour shift and Johnson relishes what it may
bring.

5:30 p.m. It's time to check to see who else is on the street and add her name
to the list. Johnson takes a few minutes to scrutinize notices to the officers on
patrol and surveys the roll call book to find out what areas are requesting extra
patrols tonight.

5:40 p.m. One 'of tonight's duties will be to deliver agenda packets to the city
council members, so Johnson is off to city hall to collect the packets.

After the packets are in hand, she heads to the garage to pick up additional
gear, such as a flashlight and a radio.

5:50 p.m. Once the patrol car is started, all of the equipment, from the lights
to the emergency supplies, is checked to make sure all is working.

Once done, it's time to check out the Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) to £md out
the location of the officers on duty. Tonight there are three officers patrolling
the streets.

Right now two officers are responding to a noise disturbance. The third is
unassigned.

It's 6:04 p.m. when the 41-year-old mother of 20- and 18-year~old sons is able
to take to the snow covered roads.

Johnson has been involved with the PSA program since its inception nearly

_~_ttp ://www.ecm-inc.com/news/anoka/2001/F ebruary/8j ohnson.html

02/13/2001

I
I
I
I'
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
