I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I CASE AUTHORIZE THE HIRING OF A TEMPORARY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INTERN Klm Moore-Sykes, Assistant City Administrator Rhonda Iteryla, Human Resources Manager Background: As the City continues to grow, the Community Development Department continues to experience a growth in the demand for their services, particularly in the summer time. With the increasing number of projects that need their immediate attention, as well as the day to day assignments, Staff is requesting that the City Council again authorize the hiring of an intern for the summer months. In addition to having an intern to provide research and general zoning and land use information, the Community Development DePartment also needs to have assistance with code enforcement, sign enforcement, building activity reports, cemetery file updates, property address updates, comprehensive plan files cataloguing, ordinance research and development, special projects assistance and City Code Zoning Chapter updates. While the City will definitely benefit from the skills and talents of an intern, the City can also provide an intern with real world experience more suited to their career objectives. This individual will also receive opportunities for mentoring, networking, and basically, establishing a foundation for their career objectives. Based on the City's experience from last year's internship program, Staff budgeted approximately $6,000 in the 2001 budget to accommodate the expense of wages for an intern. This amount was not increased from last year's budgeted amount. Observations: Staff interviewed Christopher J. Kielblock for the intern position. The intervi'ew panel consisted of the Assistant City Administrator, the Community. Development Director, the City Planner and the Community Development Assistant. The panel found that Mr. Kiellolock possessed the necessary qualifications for the 3-month intern position. If Mr. Kielblock is approved for this position, he is available immediately and can work with the City until the second week of August, at which time he needs to return to school. Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends that City Council approve the hiring of Mr. Kielblock for Community Development intern position. /~ouncil Action: (Approve the hiring of Mr. Kielblock for Community Development 3-month intern -305-
