I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />CASE <br /> <br />AUTHORIZE THE HIRING OF A TEMPORARY COMMUNITY <br />DEVELOPMENT INTERN <br /> Klm Moore-Sykes, Assistant City Administrator <br /> Rhonda Iteryla, Human Resources Manager <br /> <br />Background: <br />As the City continues to grow, the Community Development Department continues to <br />experience a growth in the demand for their services, particularly in the summer time. <br />With the increasing number of projects that need their immediate attention, as well as the <br />day to day assignments, Staff is requesting that the City Council again authorize the <br />hiring of an intern for the summer months. <br /> <br />In addition to having an intern to provide research and general zoning and land use <br />information, the Community Development DePartment also needs to have assistance with <br />code enforcement, sign enforcement, building activity reports, cemetery file updates, <br />property address updates, comprehensive plan files cataloguing, ordinance research and <br />development, special projects assistance and City Code Zoning Chapter updates. <br /> <br />While the City will definitely benefit from the skills and talents of an intern, the City can <br />also provide an intern with real world experience more suited to their career objectives. <br />This individual will also receive opportunities for mentoring, networking, and basically, <br />establishing a foundation for their career objectives. <br /> <br />Based on the City's experience from last year's internship program, Staff budgeted <br />approximately $6,000 in the 2001 budget to accommodate the expense of wages for an <br />intern. This amount was not increased from last year's budgeted amount. <br /> <br />Observations: <br />Staff interviewed Christopher J. Kielblock for the intern position. The intervi'ew panel <br />consisted of the Assistant City Administrator, the Community. Development Director, the <br />City Planner and the Community Development Assistant. The panel found that Mr. <br />Kiellolock possessed the necessary qualifications for the 3-month intern position. If Mr. <br />Kielblock is approved for this position, he is available immediately and can work with the <br />City until the second week of August, at which time he needs to return to school. <br /> <br /> Staff Recommendation: <br /> Staff recommends that City Council approve the hiring of Mr. Kielblock for Community <br /> Development intern position. <br /> <br />/~ouncil Action: <br />(Approve the hiring of Mr. Kielblock for Community Development 3-month intern <br /> <br />-305- <br /> <br /> <br />
