Voting No: None. <br /> <br />Case #2: Approve Management for City of Ramsey Supervisory Pe~'~0n~.~l~ <br /> <br />Assistant City Administrator Moore-Sykes stated that in the last couple of years the City of <br />Ramsey has promoted or hired multiple people into supervisory or leadership roles. Although <br />these personnel changes were necessary to keep up with the growing staff and organizational <br />changes, training and guidance for supervisors and department heads were not always provided. <br />At this time, staff is requesting supervisory training for the management team to help them brush <br />up on their management skills and become more effective leaders for the City organization. Staff <br />is considering a training opportunity for the City's management team for several reasons. The. <br />City of Ramsey is undergoing a lot of change, and the effects are seen in City Hall with increased <br />workloads and the support of new technology and new employees. Dealing with change is <br />difficult for' managers because it. requires a'new approach.to even 'routine responsibilities and <br />motivating staff people to take part in it. The management team is not different fi:om that of <br />other organizations in that it needs to constantly improve on its supervisory and people skills. <br />Some sort of annual training provides an opportunity to focus on and talk about alternative ways <br />of dealing with supervisory issues while enlisting the support of more seasoned managers in <br />conforming problems that may arise. Having all of the management team present in one room <br />for the purpose of improving their management skills is a great opportunity to build some <br />cohesiveness in the staff and open lines of communication between departments. Better trained <br />supervisors will be better able to handle employee problems and help find workable solutions or <br />at least know what resources and tools are available to help them. If supervisors and staff have <br />good working relationships, the productivity of the departments, satisfaction with one's job and <br />service to the public all benefit. Staff contacted Salverda & Associated about the possibility of <br />conducting management team training onsite and was quoted a fee of $1,500 for onsite training <br />of up to 16 people. Salverda & Associates has considerable experience providing consulting <br />services to public sector management/supervisory emPloyees. Their proposal would include <br />examining areas of management difficulties, identifying resources and information that <br />supervisory personnel can access, and providing techniques/ideas that supervisors can use in <br />managing staff and productivity. <br /> <br />Motion by Mayor Gamec, seconded by Councilmember Anderson, to recommend that the City <br />Council approve of onsite management team training by Salverda & Associates at a fee not to <br />exceed $1,500. <br /> <br />Motion carried.
