I
i

I
I
i
I
I
I
I$
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PC CASE # ~.~

AUTHORIZE HIRING OF TEMPORARY ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN
Rhonda Heryla, Human Resources Manager

.Background:

With the resignation of Klm Moore-Sykes, staff immediately began a process to hire a new
Assistant City Administrator. Although it is anticipated that interviews will be held towards the
end of November, it is probable that a newly hired Assistant City Administrator will not be able
to begin work until after the first of the year. In the meantime, projects and commitments are
falling behind. A similar situation existed the latter part of 1999 when the City was hiring a new
Assistant City Administrator/Human Resource Manager and former City Administrator Ed
Schukle was contracted to perform special projects.

Staff would like to bring in a graduate level intern for two to three months to continue working
on special projects. Like the Community Development intern fi.om the past summer, the wage
would be $12.00 per hour. In the absence of an Assistant City Administrator, there is money in
the budget to support an intern. In order to fill the position quickly, staff would review resumes
and conduct interviews until the position is filled.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff is recommending that the Council authorize staff to interview and hire an Administrative
Intern at a wage of $12.00 per hour for a period of two to three months to bridge the transition
between Assistant City Administrators.

Committee Action:

Staff is recommending that the Council authorize staff to interview and hire an Administrative
Intern at a wage of $12.00 per hour for a period of two to three months to bridge the transition
between Assistant City Administrators.

Reviewed by:
City Administrator

PC: 11/13/01

-251-
