The City does not have a treatment facilitY that removes iron and manganese from the
water supply. 'rt~e iron and mangmnese, therefore, accumulates on the in.~ide of the water distribution
piping network.

Over time, the accumulated iron and manganese will be released from the piping network and cause a
discolohng of the water supply.- It is very difficult to pinpoint why some areas within the water
distr/bution system have more iron and manganese released than other areas. Some factors that imquence
this are age and type of piping,.water plumbing within homes, pressures, and flow direction.

Operational eMnges ia the water ,system can also cause the release of more iron and manganese within
the distribution system. Durhag the dine period that thc discolored water sample was taken, the City did
.have one of its water towers out of service for maintenance. This would have caused changes in Re
direction of water flow within the distribution system and the potmtial release of more accumulated iron
and manganese.

The follow/ng steps can be taken to el/minute or reduce the amount of iron and manganese within the
water system:

1. Construct a water trealzneat facility for ~e removal of ken and manganese.
2. Irmrease the frequency.of water system flushing.
3. Evalbate var/ous chemical additions for reducing the o×idization of iron and'manganese and
the accumulated' iron and manganese within the water distribution system.
4. Evaluam operational changes in the water system (i.e. operating of various wells, filling of
water towers, etc.).

In addition. I would suggest that Re City initiate a tracking system for water quality complaints. This
would provide valuable information for ~e City to idenfi~ areas, evaluae causes and develop solutions.

If you Mve any questions or need further assimnce, please feel free to cae me at 507-625-4I'71.

err M.
