INFORMATION ON THE CHICAGO MIXED USE TOUR
By: Patrick Trudgeon, Principal Planner

CASE #

Background:

On August 23, 2001, the City of Ramsey took 42 persons to Chicago in order to tour
mixed-use developments located near commuter rail stations. Participants of the tour
included City Councilors, Planning, Park, Charter, and EDA Commissioners, City
Consultants, City Staff, Ramsey business leaders, and interested Kamsey citizens.

Observations:

The group visited four municipalities in the Chicago area; Arlington Heights, Deerfield,
Highland Park, and Lincolnshire. In each community, the group met with city staff and
conducted a walking tour of the mixed use developments. Some of the things learned
from the trip included the need for public investment through the use of T~ funds to
make a mixed use project viable and that it takes strong political will to successfully plan
and implement a mixed use project. As mentioned before, several EDA Commissioners
participated in the tour. They may wish to share their thoughts of what they saw and
learned in Chicago at the EDA meeting.

Commission Action:

No action necessary, provided for information only.

EDA: 9.17.01

-7-
