I

I
!
I
i
I
I

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

CC CASE #

AUTHORIZE PURCHASE OF SCBA COMPRESSOR FOR FIRE STATION #2
By: Dean Kapler, Fire Chief

Background:

For the year 2003 the City of Ramsey was awarded a grant through FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency) to purchase fire-fighting equipment. The grant year is coming to a close,
and because of competitive pricing, of the $168,000 awarded, the fire department has purchased
all equipment applied for, leaving $17,735 unspent.

The timing of extra funds comes at a convenient time as the compressor at Station #2 (City Hall)
is the low pressure type and with the purchase of the new high pressure SCBA's, the compressor
becomes obsolete. The "old" compressor is 94% depreciated leaving approximately $6900
available for replacement funding.

Funding:

The new compressor, which is the exact model purchased for the new fire station 3 years ago,
will cost $23,463 including shipping. Along with the balance of the FEMA funds, the city must
produce $5728. The depreciation of the "old" compressor provides for that.

Stall' Recommendation:

Staff recommends purchasing a new SCBA compressor for fire station #2 using the balance of the
FEMA funds and replacement funding from the existing compressor.

Council Action:

Motion to accept/reject Staff's recommendation.

Reviewed By:
City Administrator
Finance Director
Fire Chief

CC: 08/12/2003

-121-
