Powers and duties .. <br /> <br />The duties of a city clerk vary depending upon the type of city. <br /> <br /> i. Elected clerks/Standard Plan cities <br /> <br />Standard plan (elected) city clerks have the following duties: <br /> <br /> Give notice of each regular and special meeting. <br /> <br /> Record the proceedings of each regular and special meeting. <br />· Notify officials of their election or appointment to office. <br /> <br />· Certify to county auditor all appointments and results of city <br /> elections. <br /> <br /> Keep a minute book. <br /> <br />· Keep an ordinance book. <br /> <br />, Act as clerk and bookkeeper of the city. <br /> <br />· Be custodian of city's seal and records. <br /> <br />· Sign official city papers. <br /> <br />· Post and publish such notices, ordinances, and resolutions as <br /> may be required. <br /> <br />· Perform such other duties as may be imposed by the council. <br /> <br />· Be a participating member of the council. <br /> <br />A city clerk may have additional duties, depending upon the <br />specifics of the city. For example, if the city has a volunteer fire <br />department, the clerk must serve as an ex-officio member on the <br />board of trustees for the firefighters' relief association. <br /> <br />Although not specifically provided for by state statute, city clerks <br />also often serve as public information officers, providing information <br />to .residents and answering inquiries regarding the city. <br /> <br /> 2.
