I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I FC CASE SUPPORT ANOKA COUNTY JOINT LAW ENFORCEMENT COUNCIL REGARDING FEDERAL GRANT FOR ACCESS TO RECORDS FROM POLICE CARS By: David Gustafson, Chief of Police Background: Through the Joint Law Enforcement Council and with the support of the city councils and county board, the police departments and Sheriffs Office have created joint police records. With this powerful law enforcement tool, a department will be able to access information on a suspect relating to criminal activity that occurred any place in the county. In addition, site specific history is available on the system. Thus, an officer is able to access the dangerousness of a person or site and obtain information that may assist in proving guilt. The Joint Law Enforcement Council has been pursuing technology and grant resources that would make this information available in the police cars. Currently this information is available only at the police station. The Joint Law Enforcement Council has iC~'~ntified a grant which would provide 50% funding for the research and implementation of a system to transmit the information to the police cars. The Executive Committee of the Council has authorized the application for the grant. Recommendation: Staff recommends City Council support the Joint Law Enforcement Council's application for a grant to assist funding of research and implementation of a system providing access to police records from squad cars.
