I

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
t
I
I

PC CASE

AUTHORIZE APPOINTMENT OF TWO FULL TIME PUBLIC WORKS
MAINTENANCE WORKERS AND NAME AN ALTERNATE
Rhonda Heryla, Human Resources Manager

Background:

Since late February staff has been following the process to replace a full-time Public
Works Maintenance Worker and recently Council authorized the hiring of a second full-
time Public Works Maintenance Worker when Brian Swanson resigned on March 23,
2000. Twenty eight applications were received for the two positions. Applic?ions were
reviewed, rated and ranked independently by the Human Resources Manager, Personnel
Manager, Parks/Utilities Supervisor and Streets Supervisor. The Director of Public
Works and the Human Resources Manager reviewed the findings and decided to
interview, twelve candidates.

Panel interviews were conducted on April 5 and April 6. The panel consisted of the
Director of Public Works, the Parks/Utilities Supervisor, the Streets Supervisor, and the
Human Resources Manager. All interviews lasted approximately 45 minutes and the
same questions were asked of each candidate.

Based on interview results, the interview panel recommends that positions be offered to
Jon Pearson and Chad Christian. Because of the tight job mm'ket and lengthy hiring
process, the panel would also recommend that Levi Dargis be named as an alternate in the
event one of the first two candidates declines an offer. The job offers would be
contingent upon successful completion of background investigations of driving records
and criminal histories, reference checks, and physical examinations.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends that City Council authorize staff to offer a full-time Public Works
Maintenance Worker position to Jon Pearson and to Chad Christian effective 4/12/00 and
name Levi Dargis as an alternate. The job offers would be contingent upon successful
completion of background investigations of driving records and criminal histories,
reference checks, and physical examinations.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that City Council authorize staff to offer full time Public Works
Maintenance Worker positions to Jon Pearson and to Chad Christian effective 4/12/00
and name Levi Dargis as an alternate in the event one of the candidates declines the offer.
