I
I
I
I

I
I
I

i
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PC CASE

REQUEST AUTHORIZATION TO REOPEN HIRING PROCESS FOR ONE
FULL-TIME PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKER
Rhonda Heryla, Human Resources Manager

Background:

In late February staff began a process to recruit and hire a full-time Public Works
Maintenance Worker. The number of needed workers was increased 'to two when Brian
Swanson resigned from his position as a Public Works Maintenance Worker on March
23, 2000. On April 11, 2000, Council authorized the hiring of two Public Works
Maintenance Workers and naming one alternate.

The positions were offered to two applicants; one accepted and has begun full-time
employment while the other applicant declined the offer. The alternate also declined the
position. Therefore the Public Works department is still down by one full-time position.

After reviewing the list of applicants once again, staffis concerned that going deeper into
the list to hire for the second position will not give the City an employee that has the
skills, abilities, and experience necessary to do the job tasks of the position in an effective
and efficient manner. By reopening the hiring process, staff feels they may have another
opportunity to recruit more qualified applicants.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends that City Council authorize staff to reopen the hiring process for one
full-time Public Works Maintenance Worker position.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that City Council authorize staffto reopen the hiring process for
one full-time Public Works Maintenance Worker position.

Reviewed by:
City Administrator
Assistant City Administrator
Director of Public Works

PC: 5/23/00
