i
I
I

CASE

SELECTION OF A GRAPHIC DESIGN ARTIST
TO REDESIGN CITY LOGO
By: Kim Moore-Sykes, Assistant City Administrator

Background:
In March, the City Council directed staff to solicit proposals from various graphic design artists
who may have an interest in working with the City in redesigning the current city logo. A list of
nine design firms were provided by the League of Minnesota Cities. Each firm was sent a letter
describing the process and deadlines. The staff received six proposals.

The following is a list of the firms that responded with design submittals and corresponding cost
estimates for the project.

Laurie Ingram Duren $12,150.00
Marie Moreland $ 6,250.00
Kulhanek Design Studio $ 6,000.00
Bob Burger Studio $ 2,850.00*
Bruce Kraft $ 1,900.00'
Tom O'Brien $ 1,200.00

*Submitted design examples of work done for past client because these firms do not create logo
designs on speculation.

The cost estimates vary depending on the amount of time estimated to do the design and the
amount of assistance required to utilize the design on letterhead, business cards, water towers and
pins. Council is being asked to select an artist whose work exhibits a style that will culminate in
a logo design the will be unique to the City of Ramsey.

Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve selection of Tom O'Brien as the artist to
redesign the City's logo. Mr. O'Brien's submittal is consistent with the City's criteria for design
and within budget for the project.

Reviewed By:
City Administrator
Assistant City Administrator

Copies also distributed to:

CC 05/23/2000

.5'7
