CASE

RESUME PROCESS TO HIRE PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKER
Rhonda Heryla, Human Resources Manager

Background:

Previously staff had hired Dan Holman for the position of Public Works Maintenance
Worker and he began work on August 21, 2000. Mr. Holman resigned from his position
at the end of the day thereby leaving the position vacant.

The position had previously been posted internally as specified by the AFSCME
agreement before being posted externally. No internal candidates applied and sixteen
applications were received from the external posting. Each of the sixteen applicants was
sent a supplemental application to further identify their skills, equipment proficiency, and
salary requirements. Nine applicants returned their supplemental application to continue
in the process. Mr. Holman was one of five applicants interviewed. In contacting the
first and second alternates, staff determined that one individual has already accepted a
position and the other individual required a considerably higher wage.

Staff is requesting authorization to conduct a second interview with one individual
previously interviewed by the panel. In the event this candidate does not work out, staff
would like authorization to proceed in advertising the position.

Council Action:

Motion to recommend that the City Council authorize staff to resume the hiring process
for a Public Works Maintenance Worker by conducting a second interview and
advertising the position once again if necessary.

Reviewed by:
City Administrator
Assistant City Administrator
Director of Public Works

CC: 9/5/00

-7-
