AND 150'~ AVENUE N.W. ' .
By: Ste~e?ankowski, City Engineer
3'

Background:

At the October 24,.2000 Council meeting, Roberta Mathesen a resident at 14970 Waco Street
N.W. appeared to request that consideration be given to some measures to slow the speed of the
traffic on Waco Street N.W. specifically--tsetween 149th Avenue N.W~ and 150th Avenue N.W.

The segment of Waco Street N.W. was constructed in 1992 as a Minnesota State Aid (MSA)
street and was constructed to a width of 43 feet, which compares to a 24 width north of 150th
Avenue N.W. and 28 feet south of 149th Avenue N.W. Although this segment of street is
substantially wider than' the remainder of Waco Street N.W. south of 149th Avenue N.W.,.it
should be noted similar concerns regarding traffic speed have been received.fi-om the segment to
the south as well.

Observation:

Staff is in the process of purchasing a speed watch trailer, and .is expecting delivery by January
2001. The speed trailer is an effective device to advise motorists of concern over traffic speed
within the neighborhood, and of reminding the motorist of the speed limit and their own speed.
In addition to these functions, the unit being purchased will also come equipped with a data
acquisition device which are capable of producing reports which show the distribution of traffic
speeds, what percentage of vehicles are exceeding the. limits, and a distribution of traffic and
speeds relative to time of day. This data could be helpful in effectively focusing enforcement
activity by the police department.

Committee Action:

Based on discussion.

Reviewed by:

Director of Public Works
¢
Police Chief

PW: 11/21/00

-227/
