Engineering

Each year Ramsey adds to its inventory of paved streets. The chart below shows the
number of miles of'paved streets the City has owned and maintained during the past few years.

Year Miles of Paved
Streets
-1998 133.27
1997 131.63
1996 130.62
1995 125.69
1994 123.1
1993 118.27
1992 112.09
1990 106.1

The City also maintains 6.82 miles of dirt and gravel roadways, and Anoka County and the
State control another 38.45 miles of paved arterial highway corridors. Ongoing maintenance of
these roadways is a high priority. Annually, the City completes sealcoating or overlays on
approximately 15 miles of existing City streets. In 1993, the Council created the Public
Improvement Revolving Fund (PIR) to provide the dollars necessary to pay for half of the cost of
this maintenance. Without this fund, either the property owner would pay all of the necessary
costs or a tax increase would be required for the City portion of the sealcoating program. The
PIR is self-supporting through its interest earnings.
During 1998, the City sealcoated 13.14 miles of streets which included the following
subdivisions; Autumn Meadows, Brows Unplatted areas in Sections 6 and 7, the North Forty,
Trott Brook Estates, Shady Lawn Estates, Alpace Estates and Alpaca Estates 2ha, Green Valley
Estates 2''d, Ford Brook Estates east of T.H. #47, Alicia Addition, Hunters Ridge, Section 21
Unplatted Section 15, Wildwood Acres, Zirconium Street north of 167th Avenue and Tiger Street.
The City overlayed 1.49 miles of streets including the following; Ford Brook Estates west
of T.H. #47, and Barthels Rum River Acres.
The City has been approved for federal and state financi'al assistance to improve Trunk
Highway #47 between 142nd Avenue and 153rd Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in
November, 1999 with completion sometime in the fall of 2000.

Utilities

Major improvements were also made to the utility system in 1998. A total of $2.044
million of water and sewer lines were installed in new subdivisions or to interconnect (loop) lines
within the urban section of the community. Well No. 4 was completed and brought on line in the
fall of 1998. A second water tower will be constructed by 1999 in order to service the industrial
parks and the western part of the urban district.
