End of 'I 998 Interviews with Individual Firefighters

As in past years the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief hosted an end of the year interview with
each firefighter. The purpose is to maintain a line of communication in a confidential atmosphere
to solicit new and different ideas within the fire department. Although considered confidential
listed below are the questions with replies (without identification)

#1) What were your thoughts on RFD's training program for 1998. What would you like to
see more of? Less of?

Understand several subjects are mandated, more hands on, very good, could be more creative,
more advanced topics, mutual aid drills would be nice, additional drill each month for interested
individuals, day training good since covering same subjects as night, more medical, nothing less,
pretty good, liked all drills to date, map drill was excellent, enjoy the hands on portions, more
extrication classes, more live surprise scenarios, more involved extrication classes, sucks-need to
upgrade more, cover more important stuff, very good, no suggestions to improve, more live
burns, drills are good, training top notch, good, day training going well, more drills that challenge
the dept, more mass casualty drills, ice rescue?, drills are good, maybe split training sessions
between new and more advanced people, cross training with other FD's, more roof operations,
training very well done, well organized', Did not like as instructor, more hands on,
well done, appreciate efforts put into training.

2.) In '1998 RFD had very little interest in'State and Sectional Fire Schools, in your opinion
why the lack of interest?

Thought too many had signed up, no opinion, too busy, more recognition to FF's who have
attended, No opinion, no extra time with family, information was not accessible to new FF's,
quality of schools seems to be going down, could make some of the classes a requirement?
same old classes offered as in past years, would be very willing to go in future, just too busy, will
go next year, lack of available time, would like to see more advanced pump training offered, no
real value to this person, may be ir.'.erested this year, some people trained out by regular drills,
was not aware of the criteria for attending the schools, desire to improve gets less and less with
time, glad to have opportunity, most classes seem to be for officers, maybe next year, no time
this year, bring up during business meetings, more management and computer classes would be
nice to see offered, too busy.

3.) What do you see as the best thing about RFD? The worst?

Best-
Lot of good FF's on team, Good new recruits, glad we are a strict dept, the people, everyone
coming together for the same reason, camaraderie with everyone, added training (CPR),
teamwork, everyone works as a team, positive attitudes, handling growth of the community (FF's
and equipment), good organization and information given about dept and city, dept is handled
good, good at looking ahead/not caught off guard, probationary FF's treated well/allowed to
participate right from beginning, good group of people, work well together, good teamwork, good
focus on future growth(equipment and manpower), open communications, looking out for safety
of FF's on scene and in training, just like being here, good people, good training, good people,
good experiences, good working relationships with chief's, getting respect from other depts.,
people working as a group, minds open to change and better ideas, training opportunities, getting
credit for work well done, everybody gets along well with each other, no politics in dept, good
people,

Worst-
Lack of team events(softball, etc), no worst comments, more emphasis on what went right rather
than the negative, some people don't want to make decisions in training and on scenes (shouldn't
have to), sometimes takes too much time, fire chief being pulled in too many directions/not
