Our current design is not
in compliance with The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. At that time, the
Committee asked the department to give a cost estimate to switch over. The Public
Works Depar~ent considered the following options:

I. Do nothing
In this option the Public Works Department would only replace signs with the new design
as they became damaged or stolen.

II. Manufacture our own signs

Advantages

a) Need for sign inventory is minimal.
b) Quality control
c) Quick turnaround time on sign replacement
d) The ability to make custom signs for various City functions
e) Sign making and installation could be done in winter

Disadvantages
a) Initial start up cost (Approximately $15,000.00)
b) Labor involved in sign making process
c) Space needed for operation

III. Buy Signs From Vendor

Advantages
a) Minimal labor costs incurred
b) No need to buy special equipment
c) No space required for sign making process

Disadvantages
a) Slightly higher cost
b) Slow turn around time (3-4 weeks on average)
c) Cost of carrying and replenishing inventory
d) Possible liability issues because of missing signs

Ih°~_FSllVOLl~userslJThielingl~JOICOUNCIL&[ROAD&BRlkgign Case-doc 05/14/99
