The total solid waste abated was 35 tons of material, which is nearly double that recycled
at the 1998 Spring and Fall Recycling Days combined.

This event is helpful to residents that have to get rid of unusual items. It is helpful to the
City because these items sometimes cause blight or nuisances on residential properties, or
sometimes are illegally dumped. It is also helpful to the region because these materials
are reused/recycled instead of finding their way into landfills.

The City of Ramsey Recycling Program also includes curbside pick-up of recycling. As
of April 30, 1999, Ramsey Residents had recycled 367 tons of material through the
residential curbside recycling program.

The City of Ramsey's ultimate goal is to keep 1,520 tons (175 pounds per person) of
recyclable materials from entering solid waste landfills.
Report submitted by Sean ~alther, Community Development Assistant

Tree Sale and Environmental Expo:

The 24th annual City Tree Sale was held on the Ramsey Elementary School campus from
7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in conjunction with the Environmental Expo. The following
nurseries provided materials for sale:

· Better Yards and Gardens
Berry Hill Farm
Green Valley Greenhouse
Henke's Nursery
· Maple Leaf Nursery
· Northwind Nursery
· Wirz Nursery

Each nursery donated a tree, which was planted at the school with the help of
Councilmember Susan Anderson, Assistant Principal Roll Carlson, Parks/Utilities
Supervisor Mark Boos, Tom Miller of Ramsey Shademakers, citizen volunteer Tara Sorg,
and Environmental Specialist Bruce Bacon.

The Metro DNR and Arbor Month Partnership provided seedlings to distribute to
children and adults for home planting. Citizen volunteers like Tara Sorg, Jessica Davis
and Eva Knudsen (Master Gardner) and Councilmember Gerald Zimmerman helped put
the seedlings in compost and bags for the trip home.

With regard to the Environmental Expo, the following were exhibitors/demonstrations:

· Raptor Center
· Science Museum of Minnesota - river model
· Geological Society Minnesota
Tom Dunlap, Canopy Tree Care - rope tree climbing demonstration

I ~RA_F$111/OL1 lusersklThielinglO_.JOICOUNCIL& IC1TYCOUNl1999MugustlRe, oonSpringEvents.doc 08/06/99

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
i
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
