I
!

RECEIVE HIRING RECOMMENDATION FOR PUBLIC WORKS
MAINTENANCE WORKER POSITION
By: Joyce Pruitt Hottinger, Administrative Services Manager

Background:
With the resignation of Charles Cornelius in August 1999, a vacancy occurred in the full-
time public works maintenance worker pool. On August 24, City Council authorized
acceptance of the resignation of Mr. Cornelius. An advertisement was placed in the Star
Tribune Newspaper on September 5th to recruit external candidates for the position. Five
applications were received by the application deadline on September 17, 1999.

.At the time of this case, Staffhad scheduled interviews with all five applicants on
Monday, September 27, 1999. A panel consisting of the Administrative Services
Manger, the Public Works Director/Fire Chief, the Public Works Supervisor and the
Parks/Utilities Supervisor will be interviewing the five candidates on Monday, September
27, 1999. Based on interview results, Staffwill recommend a finalist to Council on
September 28th for hire contingent upon successful completion of background
investigations of driving record and criminal history, reference checks and a physical
examination. The proposed starting salary would be starting step of the position in the
City's compensation plan, $24,071.00, or $11.75/hour. As with other maintenance
worker appointments, the new hire will be expected to work in both streets and
parks/utilities divisions as needed.

Committee Action:
With only one Personnel Commit[,ee prepared at this,~time, this case will be presented to
the full Council, rather than convene a Personnel ~*6mmittee meeting. The next
Personnel Committee will be scheduled for October 127:1999.

Council Action:
Motion by City Council to authorize hiring (finalist to be announced following interviews
on September 27, 1999) as the Public Works Maintenance Worker, contingent upon
successful completion of background investigations of driving record and criminal
history, reference checks, and a physical examination, at an annual salary of $24,071.

Reviewed by: Copies also distributed to:
City Administrator
Public Works Director

Attachments:
None

CC: 09/28/99
