CASE # 7

HIRING PROCESS FOR ADDITIONAL PATROL OFFICER
By: David Gustafson, Police Chief

Background:

The City of Ramsey, along with five other municipalities, conducted a joint police officer
recruiting test on November 13, 1999. The results (test scores) will be available to each of the
municipalities the week of November 21, 1999.

From that point on, each City will be on its own to conduct whatever hiring process it chooses,
independent of the others. As soon as the scores are available, each department will be in
competition for those candidates who appear to have the demeanor and capacity to become good
officers. In order for Ramsey to formulate a list of candidates to interview and advance to the
final selection process, it is important that the Police Chief move quickly once the list is
received.

The 1999 budget will accommodate the expenses associated with interviewing, background
checking, equipping, and securing medical and psychological exams for the new officer. The
year 2000 budget that is now before Council has identified the funding sources necessary to
maintain the additional officer for that year.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff is recommending setting the hiring process in motion once the test results are received.

Council Action:

Motion to authorize staff to begin the hiring process as soon as the test results are received.

Reviewed by:

Police Chief
City Administrator
Finance Officer

CC: 11/23/99

G.'lusers~lThieli~gl~dOlCOUNCIL& lCITYCOUbll1999WovemberiHirePatrolOfcr, doc 11/19/99
