CASE #1

RECOMMEND CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF A FEASIBILITY
REPORT FOR A NINE HOLE GOLF COURSE
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

The purpose of this case is to receive the Commission's Opinion on the matter of development of
a nine-hole golf course in conjunction with City sponsored commercial/industrial land
development. The site location would be south of the landfill, north of the future Sunwood Drive
and between Sunfish Lake Boulevard and County Road #116 to the west. A site location map is
enclosed.

Observation:

The concept would be to integrate commercial/industrial business with the course for near term
economic development and to provide long term diversity in business siting choices. The course
and associated business park could then take full advantage of the existing park land and
wetlands thereby adding and protecting open space in this area.

The reason for examining the issue now is to understand how a course would benefit the
commercial/industrial land sales and property valuation. The issue of what entity would provide
for daily course operations (public or private) would not be addressed in this study. The course
construction costs, however, as well as an annual operations and maintenance estimate would be
addressed.

A $3,500 proposal to address the above issues is attached. Monies for this project were included
in the 1999 Parks Operations Budget. Should City Council decide to approve the feasibility
study, the Park Commission as well as the Economic Development Authority and Planning
Commission would be involved throughout the process.

Commission Action:

Motion to recommend/not recommend City Council fund a feasibility report for a nine-hole golf
course in conjunction with potential commercial/industrial development south of the landfill.

Reviewed By:

Copies also distributed to:

City Administrator
Park/Utilities Supervisor
Director of Public Works

City Engineer
Finance OffiCer

PR:01/14/99

shared/parks/99agcnda/jan/golfcourse
