PW CASE

PURCHASE UPDATE ON REPLACEMENT GRADER
By: Grant Riemer, Public Works Street Supervisor

Background:

On January 26, 1999, staff was granted authorization to purchase a replacement grader
through the State of Minnesota Cooperative Purchasing Venture. Included in the 1998
year-end transfer was $132,500, plus $68,258 from the equipment replacement fund
(depreciated value of the 1978 John Deere Grader) for a total of $200,758 to fund the
purchase of a new grader.

Observation:

Public Works staff test-drove and compared machines from three different
manufacturers. Our operators were most impressed with the John Deere motor grader.
The features that stood out were the all-wheel drive system, the visibility from the cab,
and the overall performance of the transmission. John Deere also gave us the highest
trade in value for our old grader.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends the purchase of a new 1999 John Deere 772CH Motor Grader, at an
approximate cost of $160,000.

Committee Action:

No action necessary

Review Checklist:

Public Works Supervisor
Director of Public Works
City Administrator
Finance Officer

PW: 02/16/99
