PW CASE #

EMERALD POND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD
TRAFFIC SIGNAGE PLAN
By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

Within the last year, the City has received requests for stop signing to control speeding
traffic at five intersections within a neighborhood. To date, only one intersection, 142nd
Lane and Tungsten, has been controlled with stop signs.

At the May Public Works Committee meeting, staff was asked to prepare a
comprehensive signage plan covering the entire neighborhood. Staff will be presenting a
number of exhibits at the meeting, which will include: 1) identification of major traffic
streets; 2) school bus stop locations; and 3) accident history. In addition, we will be
presenting a plan for signage which includes speed limit signs and pedestrian crosswalks.
Staff is still considering whether placement of "watch for children" signs should be
incorporated into the plan. Staff still feels placement of stop signs should be avoided or
at least placed very sparingly since there are 31 intersections within this neighborhood
which have essentially the same characteristics and conditions as the ones for which stop
signs are currently being requested.

Committee Action:

The desired goal is to develop a comprehensive signage plan. It's anticipated that the
plan presented by staff may be modified by citizen and Committee input.

Reviewed by:

City Engineer
City Administrator
Director of Public Works
Police Chief

PW: 06/15/99

G:[userslJThielingl~JOICOUNCIL&~ROAD&BRllEmPndStpSgns. doc 06/10/99
