PW CASE

SUNWOOD DRIVE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS
By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

At the August 10, 1999 Council meeting a decision was made to proceed with the construction of
Sunwood Drive from Sunny Ponds to T.H. #47. At this time, the plans and specifications are
95% complete and are available for review. It is anticipated that I will be asked to sign the final
plan within three weeks. There are several details of the plan with which the Committee may
want to have input. I have enumerated these issues below:

(2)

Crosswalks. There are no crosswalks included in the construction plans at the present time.
It would not be difficult for our public works department to add crosswalks afterward,
however, they could very easily be added to the project. Staff recommends both Erkium
Street and Germanium Street to be reasonable locations for adding crosswalk pavement
marking and signage.

Trail Locations. The location of a bituminous trail has generated some discussion over the
past several months. The plans currently have included an eight-foot bituminous trail located
on the north side of the road from C.S.A.H. #5 to T.H. #47. Staff has prepared the attached
memo which identifies the relative advantages and disadvantages for locations on both the
north and south side. Staff has no strong opinion of which side the trail should be placed or
even whether a trail or sidewalk might be placed on both sides.

(3)

Terrace Trees. The current plans have not included any terrace trees within this project.
However, terrace trees could be added to beautify the project. Within time, these trees will
provide a degree of visual screening and noise reduction to the 13 adjacent homes. Mature
trees lining a roadway also tend to enclose the roadway and reduce speeds.

Committee Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

Director of Public Works

PW: 08/17/99
