sufficient traffic exists to warrant four-way or all-way stops at these intersections. The existing
stop on the northeast leg of Willemite Street and 150th Lane would be removed. The cost of this
alternative is estimated at $200 per sign, or a total of $1,200.

Alternative C

This alternative is intended to be a combination of Alternatives A and C and is intended to
increase the effectiveness of the cut-through deterrent while decreasing cost by using fewer
expensive speed humps. The proposal is illustrated in the figure labeled Alternative C and
includes four speed humps and six stop signs. The total estimated cost of this alternative is
estimated to be $11,200.

Recommendation:

In light of the fact that the extension of C.R. #116 will provide a superior alternative route for
traffic which is presently using the subject residential corridor, Staff is of the opinion that
Alternate B be implemented on a temporary basis. Although stop signs are not intended for
speed control, installing them on a temporary basis to evaluate their effectiveness for that
purpose is proposed. This also provides an economical alternative during the interim period
which will allow an opportunity to assess if more costly measures outlined in this report are
warranted or whether the reduction in traffic is significant to cause the removal of the signs after
C.R. #116 is functional. Staff recommends removal of the signs if traffic through the corridor is
reduced 50%.

Council Action:

Council should direct Staff to implement one of the alternatives.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator
City Engineer
Police Chief
Fire Chief/Director of Public Works

CC: 03/24/98

Shared/Engineer/Trafcalm.doc

7¥

I
I

I

I
I
I

I
I
I
I
I
I
