The <br />position was left vacant until a new City Administrator could be hired and have time to <br />assess the City's economic development needs. During the past two months, the City <br />Administrator has concluded that the City's entire Community Development Department <br />would benefit from some reorganization, the establishment of a Community Development <br />Director position and the elimination of the Economic Development Coordinator <br />position. The proposed reorganization was shared with the City Council at a March 17, <br />1998 work session. A copy of the proposed organization chart is included with this case. <br /> <br />The department reorganization would move the City Engineer to the Public Works <br />Department where he would concentrate on engineering duties. .A Community <br />Development Director would be hired to supervise and coordinate the activities of the <br />Zoning Administrator, Community Development Assistant, Environmental Specialist and <br />the Inspections staff. The recommendation includes continuation of contractual services <br />for economic development assistance in locating prospective clients. Many of the in- <br />house ¢:onomic development activities would be shared between the Community <br />Development Director and the Community Development Assistant. The contract for <br />economic development consulting would be administered by the Community <br />Development Director. <br /> <br />Staff was directed at the March 17, 1998 Council work session to prepare for Council <br />consideration a proposed job description for the position of Community Development <br />Director. The proposed position description is included in this case. The expected salary <br />range for the position is $50,000 to $58,000 annually. <br /> <br />Committee Action: <br /> <br />Review the proposed job description for Community Development Director and revise as <br />necessary. <br /> <br />Recommend City Council approval of the Community Development Director position. <br /> <br />Recommend that City Council authorize staff to begin the process of filling the <br />Community Development Director position. <br /> <br /> <br />
