Administrative Services Manager Waite Smith reported that the County's training classes
fill quickly and the volunteers would have to be trained in the fall 1998 session to be
ready for service in 1999. If they do not receive the training this fall, the City could not
utilize their services until the year 2000.

Councilmember Haas Steffen suggested talkin~ with the Anoka County Sheriff's
Department relative to their volunteer program. She felt that this case does not give a
detailed plan for the Public Safety Aid positions nor does it list their duties and
responsibilities. She asked that the Police Chief come back with a plan listing duties,
responsibilities, priorities and programs the Aids would be involved in. She added, with
regard to the Corporal position, that it should be temporary and she wondered if with
creating a Corporal position, would another patrol officer be needed. She recollected
Chief Gustafson stating that the number of personnel in his department was "good for
another couple years".

The Personnel Committee determined that further information from Chief Gustafson is
required prior to taking any action on this issue.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Mayor Gamec to adjoum the meeting.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec and Councilmember Beyer.

The regular meeting of the Personnel committee adjourned at 6:39 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jo Thieling
Deputy City Clerk

Linda Waite Smith
Administrative Services Manager

Personnel Committee/May 26, 1998
