I am very pleased to inform you that the Ramsey Police Department has
been awarded a 2nd place prize in the 1998 Minnesota Safe & Sober Challenge. The prize
will be in the form of a mini-grant for $1,000.00.

And if that isn't enough good news, here is some more: every agency which sent in an entry
will also receive a new digital PBT compliments of Public Safety. It will take some time to
order and calibrate PBTs - we are hoping to be able to send it to you before January Ist but
any purchasing hold-ups or an unexpected back-up of work at the BCA (which will be doing
the calibrating) may move that date back.

Bill Quinn, the Safe & Sober liaison for your agency, and I would like to meet with you to
discuss . You will be hearing from us soon to set up a
meeting for early December. You may want to give some thought tallitt~[[lt~
~iffilSllltll~ When Bill Quinn and I meet with you, we'd be happy to present your plaque for
photographs to be taken and to talk about your project with the press - please don't feel you
must accept this offer, either a yes or no is fine with us.

The~grants must be used for traffic safety purposes and as additional funding to benefit to
your agency. In the past, the mini-grants have been used for overtime patrolling hours, traffic
safety-related equipment such as PBTs or fatal vision goggles, the printing of materials or
bumper stickers, or to purchase small incentives with traffic safety messages such as pens or
caps to hand out.

The award plaques will be also presented at a luncheon on Tuesday, December 10th at the
Como Park Pavilion in downtown St. Paul in conjunction with the kick-offto the 1999 Safe &
Sober campaign. I will arrange to pay for hotel costs for the night of the 9th if you will find it
necessary to drive quite a distance. Please let me know by November 25th wh$, if anyone,
from your agency will be present to receive the plaque and if you think a hotel for the evening
of the 24th will be necessary.

In order to start the necessary paperwork for the award, I will need an ink signature and
stamped copy of your county board's or city council's resolution authorizing the acceptance
of the mini-grant. I have attached a copy of a resolution that includes the necessary points

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
