AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKERS By: Linda WaRe Smith, Administrative Services Manager Background: The adopted 1999 operating budget contains an additional Public Works Maintenance Worker. During recruitment and selection for a Public Works Maintenance Worker position in November 1998, the opening was posted internally, then advertised externally. Applications were rated independently by the Administrative Services Manager and the two Public Works supervisors to produce an interview list. Six applicants were invited to interview on November 3, 1998. The interview panel consisted of the Public Works Director, Parks/Utilities Supervisor, Public Works Streets Supervisor and the Administrative Services Manager. All applicants were asked the same questions and their responses rated independently by the interviewers. On the basis of the applications and interviews, the interview panel ranked the applicants and recommended hiring the applicant at the top of the list. The interview panel now recommends that Jeremy Anderson, the second ranked person on the list, be hired to fill the new position, contingent upon successful completion of driving record check, reference checks, criminal background check and physical examination. With City Council approval, Mr. Anderson's start date would be January 4, 1999. His salary would be the starting step of the 1999 compensation plan, $24,066 annually. Committee Action: Recommend that City Council authorize hiring Jeremy Anderson as a Public Works Maintenance Worker, effective on or after January 4 1999, at an annual salary of $24,066, contingent upon successful completion of background checks and physical examination.
