CASE

DAYCARE FOR INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYEES
By: James E. Norman

Background:

The Human Resources Department of Vision-Ease Lens of the Energy Park Industrial Park,
contacted the City of Ramscy to discuss the need for daycare provider opportunities for industrial
employees. Attached to this case is a survey of the three daycare center providers in Ramsey
showing what current vacancies exist. The difficulty for the industrial employees is that current
daycare centers do not accommodate anything other than the traditional 12-hour daytime shift.
The difficulty arises because new industrial and future industrial will be around-the-clock
employment.

The question before the EDC is the role the City should play in accommodating daycare needs
for industrial employees. One direction may include contacting current providers to determine if
expansion of daycare center hours would be considered or working with a developer to build a
new daycare center in an industrial development area.

Commission Action:

The Commission will be asked to discuss the need to be more involved in the daycare provider
issue.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator

EDC: 05/07/98

jmt/Daycare.doc
