Schroeder, City Administrator <br /> <br /> Background: <br /> <br />At the January 28, 1997 meeting, Council received report that the Continental/US West merger <br />affects several cable franchises in the Metro Area. QCTV is one of the smaller franchises, yet it <br />had the earliest renewal date. Therefore, the Cable Commission had requested that the operation <br />extend the existing franchise term to allow for some of the larger cable commissions to negotiate <br />new franchise agreements prior to QCTV having to do so. The cable operator has agreed to an <br />extension to September, 1998. Enclosed is the agenda material which was presented to the QCWV <br />for consideration of the franchise extension and also to Council at their January meeting. With the <br />QCTV approval, each City must approve the action for that extension to be valid. At their January <br />28 meeting, Council introduced an ordinance initiating this action.
