The Council has received
copies of the current job description for his position but has not had an opportunity to discuss it.
As background for the discussion, staff has collected current job'descriptions from a number of
other cities. A matrix comparing major responsibilities and required qualifications is attached to
this case, along with a copy of Ramsey's complete job description.

Additional information has been collected by the City Administrator and Administrative Services
Manager through interviews with 24 people, including all employees in the Police Department,
all elected officials, and the department heads. Because the interveiws extend through Friday,
February 21, 1997, a smnmary of the information gathered will not be available at the time the
agenda packet is assembled. It will be delivered to Councilmembers on Monday, February 24,
along with staff conclusions about how the current job description might be revised to better
meet the perceived needs of the Police Department and the City.

Based on the discussion, Council should decide:

1) Whether or not to revise the current job description, and if so, how;

2) Whether the City should proceed with an external or internal/external search process.

3) How to proceed with the selection process

Committee Action:

Based on discussion

Reviewed By:

City Administrator
City Attorney
Administrative Services Manager

PC 2/11/97

lindas\police\jobdescr.cas
