After Councilmembers and Police
Department employees were interviewed for input about the department's current operations and
future direction, the position opening was posted internally for two weeks. We received one
application. Councilmembers agreed to interview the applicant on Wednesday, April 2, 1997.
Depending on the results of the interview, the Council will appoint the internal candidate or open
the selection process to external applications. If the Council makes an appointment at its April 8
meeting, it would be appropriate to discuss terms of employment including salary, probation
period, expectations and work plan. The posted hiring range was $47,890 to $56,303. The
Acting Police Chief is currently being paid $54,256.

Staff Recommendation:

Will depend on the results of the interview process on April 2.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that

1. Council appoint the internal candidate to the Police Chief position and establish terms of
employment.
OR

2. Council authorize staffto advertise the Police Chief position and solicit applications.

Reviewed By:

City Administrator
Administrative Services Manager

PC 4/08/97
