One is the vacancy that resulted when
Sgt. Dave Gustafson was appointed Police Chief. The other was a promotional opportunity,
rather than an additional position, authorized in the 1997 City budget. Chief Gustafson has been
utilizing two officers in temporary Corporal work assignments and is now ready to fill the
Sergeant positions. In preparation, the Police Chief, City Administrator and Administrative
Services Manager have reviewed the job description for the position, agreed on a starting salary,
and modified as necessary, the job posting, written exam and interview questions.

With Council approval, the positions would be posted internally fi.om May 14 to May 28.
Starting date would be on or after July 1, 1997, at a salary of $51,000 per year. Applicants
would be required to take a written exam and have an interview with a panel consisting of the
Police Chief, Administrative Services Manager and a Patrol Officer. Final selection would be
based on a combination of experience, past performance, proven ability ~o work effectively with
others in the department, written exam scores, and interview results.

These positions would be exempt, as the Sergeant's position has been since it was created in
1993. When the positions are filled, the temporary Corporal assignments will end.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that Council authorize staff to post the two Sergeant position vacancies
internally for two weeks, from May 14 to May 28. Start date for the position would be on or
after July 1, 1997, at an annual salary of $51,000.

Reviewed By:

City Administrator
Police Chief
Finance Officer
Administrative Services Manager

PC 05/13/97

Copies also distributed to:

lindas\police~sgtcase.97
