Discussion Regarding Interview Questions for Boards and Commissions

By: Givonna Reed, Human Resources Manager

Background

As you know, staff sent out to all advisory group members a list of interview questions
that have been used in the past to interview applicants for the City's various advisory
groups. Staff requested that advisory group members submit comments regarding the
effectiveness of the questions that have been used, as well as suggestions for revised or
new questions.

Attached are all comments submitted in response to staffs request. Please note that with
respect to the Park and Recreation Commission, one commissioner submitted comments
individually and another commissioner shared her personal comments with Park and
Recreation Commissioners and they were agreed to by consensus. In addition to the
comments submitted by advisory group members, attached there is a list of six
recommended interview questions selected by staff from the comments and questions
submitted by advisory group members. Considering that applicants are typically asked
four questions during their 10 minute interview, if it is the Committee's decision to go
with more than four questions, the Committee may want to extend interviews to 15
minutes.

Staff Recommendation

Contingent upon discussion

PC: 09-23-03
